How trash works in Commerce City and Brighton

Commerce City's citywide trash and recycling program, run through Republic Services, covers single-family homes and duplexes; the city notes that service varies for other housing types. City code requires every property owner to have trash removed at least every 30 days, and allows a garbage chute only if it's made of metal and kept clean and free from odors at all times.

Brighton has no city trash contract: residents and businesses choose their own hauler. In July 2026, City Council unanimously adopted a hauler licensing ordinance. In coordination with Colorado's producer responsibility program, haulers providing regular curbside trash collection will be required to offer recycling at no additional charge to eligible single-family and multifamily residential customers, collected at least every two weeks.

Does Commerce City regulate garbage chutes?

Yes. City code allows a garbage chute only if it's made of metal and kept clean and free from odors at all times. Boss Bins takes bags to the enclosure or compactor instead of down the chute, which helps keep it that way.

Does Brighton's new hauler ordinance cover apartments?

The city says licensed haulers will be required to offer recycling at no additional charge to eligible multifamily residential customers as well as single-family homes. Ask your hauler how and when it applies to your community.
