Local rules

What Lafayette requires

Lafayette's universal recycling ordinance (Ordinance 2024-03) took effect January 1, 2025. Apartment properties with garbage collection must also provide recycling collection and give residents access to it, and must place clear signs on or near every garbage and recycling container showing what goes where. Apartments also submit an online annual survey describing their recycling service.

Properties facing financial hardship could request more time. The city says that starting January 2026, funds from Colorado's producer responsibility program let apartment complexes offer recycling at no cost, and that the extra time ends once those funds are available.

Questions

Valet trash in Louisville and Lafayette, answered.

Does Lafayette require apartment recycling?

Yes. Since January 1, 2025, apartment properties with garbage collection must also provide recycling collection, with clear signs at each container. The city's universal recycling page has the details.

Does valet trash satisfy Lafayette's recycling ordinance?

Not on its own. The ordinance requires recycling service and signage, and valet collection doesn't replace either. It does put recycling at every resident's door, which is the easiest way to get it used.
